Over 95 percent jobs in the first phase renovation of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) multi billion naira 18-storey building, located in Lagos along the international route linking Nigeria and the ECOWAS region, are being undertaken by the youths in the community. The community, however, has commended NSITF for gainfully engaging their youths in completing the structure whose construction began 39 years ago. A community leader, Abiodun Babatunde, who was at the site during the inspection of the project by the members of the NSITF board confirmed that about 95 percent of youths in the community have been engaged in the construction of the magnificent building.[The Sun]

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, commissioned a 1.5MegaWatts solar power project for the Ministry of Works and Housing as well the Ministry of Environment. He said the project, which is the largest solar project for a public building in Africa, will enable the reduction of carbon emissions. While virtually commissioning the project, Buhari who spoke through the Secretary-General of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said access to small scale and off-grid electricity was increasingly becoming available to Nigerians in marketplaces, universities, and business premises.[Tribune]

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has commenced the issuance of new certificates of ship registration while simultaneously phasing out the old permits. A statement by Edward Osagie, NIMASA’s Assistant Director of Public Relations, said the move was to ensure the utilization of secured statutory certificates and prevent the entry of unseaworthy and sub-standard ships into the Nigerian flag. The Director General of the Agency, Bashir Jamoh, said, “We are restructuring the Nigerian Ship Registration Office to serve you more efficiently and effectively. We are determined to grow our national fleet and tonnage to an enviable height.”[Premium Times]

As part of making housing accessible and affordable for civil servants, the Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja, commissioned 163 housing units built for the federal workers, under the Federal Integrated Staff Housing (FISH) scheme. Speaking at the occasion, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, said she was delighted for the successful delivery of the scheme which had been on government’s plan for over two years. She said that the estates at different locations in Mararaba Nasarawa State and Karshi in Abuja, is in collaboration with the Federal Government Staff Housing Loan Board (FGSHLB).[Daily Trust]

The federal government has expressed plans to create a reorientation programme aimed at engaging the youth in skills acquisition to address oil and gas infrastructure vandalism. The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, stated this at a Town Hall Meeting on “Protecting Oil and Gas Infrastructure” on Monday in Abuja. Akpabio said that the programme would be targeted at the pupils and students of primary and secondary school across the nine states in Niger Delta.[Leadership]
