The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has said the newly installed 1.52MW solar micro-grid power system at the headquarters of the ministry in Abuja and the adjoining ministry of the environment, will save the federal government N270.9 million in overheads. In addition, the minister, explained that it would further reduce the average diesel consumption by both ministries from 764,248 litres per annum to 166,825 litres every year. At the event, Fashola stated that the power system will ensure constant electricity supply to the beneficiaries, outside of the national grid.[This Day]

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment and reassignment of chancellors to 42 federal universities. He said the appointments followed the establishment of additional universities and is intended to also replace deceased chancellors of some federal universities. The minister also noted that the chancellor shall in relation to the university take precedence before all other members of the university, and shall preside at all the meetings of convocation held for conferring degrees, when he is present.[Leadership]

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr Adamu Mohammed Abdulhamid, as the new Nigeria’s ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Geneva, Switzerland for a period of four years. The appointment was contained in letter to the minister of industry, trade and investment Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, from the office the chief of staff to the president, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. The minister charged the new ambassador to cooperate with the WTO director-general, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, members of the WTO and other international organisations.[Leadership]

The federal government has certified 14 local government areas as Open Defecation Free (ODF) in Jigawa State. This was disclosed by the minister of water resources Engr. Suleiman Adamu during presenting ODP certificates to the affected local government’s areas at Sule-tankarkar. Engineer Suleman Adamu explained that the local government areas were declared Open Defecation Free after over three million families in over 40,000 communities in the 14 local government areas had met the requirement of ODF protocol for hygiene promotion.[Tribune]

As the Federal Government, on Friday, in Umuahia issued engagement letters and electronic tablets to more than 70 National Social Investment Programme, N-SIP, trained monitors in Abia, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu assured them of the state government’s partnership. Speaking as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq, handed over the letters and tablets. The Federal Government will soon establish an Aerospace University to address the challenges of qualified and specialized manpower in the nation’s aviation sector. Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, made this known at the weekly ministerial press briefing. Sirika explained that the university would be world class and would collaborate with some famous institutions.“Believe me, civil aviation alone can sustain our economy. Ethiopia is half-Nigeria, there are 85 million people and their major source of income and economy is Ethiopian Airlines “So, civil aviation alone can actually run an economy, it depends on how you do it.[The Nation]

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has forwarded the 2022–2024 Medium Time Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper to the National Assembly for consideration and passage. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, read the cover letter on the MTEF/FSP at the plenary on Thursday. Buhari said, “It is with pleasure that I forward 2022–2024 Medium Time Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) for the kind consideration and approval of the House of Representatives.[Punch]
