A total of N44.64bn has been earmarked in the 2022 Appropriation Bill for military equipment, arms and ammunition. According to the breakdown of the bill presented to the National Assembly by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.) last week, the Ministry of Defence will purchase defence equipment for N 218,041, 734; the procurement of arms , ammunition and military equipment by the Defence Headquarters is put at N250,000,000, N230,000,000 and N244,000,000 respectively. The Nigerian Army will spend N241,172,260 on construction,provision of defence equipment while the Nigerian Navy earmarked N6,892,413,452 to purchase defence equipment and 9,405,000,000 for construction/provision of defence equipment. The Federal Government has granted environmental approval for the evaluation and open cultivation of TELA Maize, a new variety of genetically modified maize developed by researchers at the Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Approval for the cultivation of the crop was announced in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, jointly signed by the Communications Officer, West and Central Africa for African Agricultural Technology Foundation; and the Information Officer, IAR/ABU, Yakubu Dodo. According to the statement, the genetically modified maize would resist fall armyworm, stem borers, and tolerate moderate drought. PUNCH
In a landmark partnership just announced, 300,000 Nigerian young people will be trained in film, television, and motion picture production over the next three years. The partnership is between Lagos-based KAP Film and Television Academy and the Mastercard Foundation. The Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), an initiative of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has created over 3000 jobs and placed Nigeria on global data protection map, which has earned the country international recognition through the creation of a new sector worth over five billion naira. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi CCIE, director general of NITDA, disclosed this in Abuja while addressing participants at the opening ceremony of the 1st Nigeria Data Expo Conference and Exhibition, organised by ioSafe Nigeria in collaboration with Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, NITDA, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Galaxy Backbone and National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
