The Ogun State Government says the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in collaboration with its ministry of Works and Infrastructure has finalised plans to embark on palliative work on critical sections on Sango-Ota-Idiroko Road, starting from Sango Under bridge to Ojuore. The Chief Press Secretary to the state government, Kunle Somorin, said this in a statement on Tuesday. Somorin said the Federal Controler of Works, Ogun State, Engr. Umar Bakare made this known shortly after inspection of critical sections on Sango-Ota-Idiroko Road and Lagos-Abeokuta road, on Monday. [Punch]
The Debt Management Office on Tuesday disclosed that the Federal Government would offer N150bn bonds for subscription in September. A circular by the DMO on its website showed that the breakdown of bonds comprised of three bonds worth N50bn each. They are 10-year re-opening bond to be offered at the rate of 13.98 per cent and to mature in February 2028; a 20- year reopening bond to be offered at 12.40 per cent and mature in March 2036; and the third and longest bond which is a 30-year reopening bond to be offered at 12.98 per cent and mature in March 2050. According to the DMO, the bonds, which will be auctioned on September 22, have a settlement date of September 24. [Punch]
The Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) for the reformed Niger Delta militants has been undergoing reforms in the last one year, an official has said. Mr Nneotabase Egbe, Special Adviser on Media to the Interim Administrator of PAP, rtd. Col. Milland Dikio told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. After a 35-year wait, the Federal Government has approved new safety threshold ground handling charges, effective October 1, 2021 for international carriers, and January 1, 2022, for domestic operators. According to the review, made known by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), foreign airlines shall pay ground handlers between $1,500 and $5,000 for passenger and cargo airlines. Their domestic counterparts shall pay between N25,000 and N70,000 depending on the aircraft type. [Guardian]
The federal government has begun the distribution of improved food storage facilities to farmers in the 19 states of the federation in order to ensure food security for teeming Nigerians. The distribution of facilities to farmers was occasioned by available data of lack of preservatives system and storage facilities by many farmers which had led to abundant foods wastage and economic hardship by the concerned farmers in the recent time.[Vanguard]
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has directed emergency repairs on sections where failure had occurred due to flooding caused by heavy downpours in five states across the country. Nigeria Police is set to employ 60,000 police personnel in six years; 10,000 each year, to tackle the prevalent shortage of manpower. Speaking with journalists in Ilorin during his one-day visit to Kwara State on Wednesday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, said that the engagement of more police personnel was supposed to have started last year. The IGP then said that a total number of 20,000 police personnel would be employed this year across the 774 local government areas of the country in order to take care of last year planned employment that did not take place.[Tribune]
The Nigerian rail system has generated a total of N71, 555,762 from evacuating cargoes in the second quarter of 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics’ Rail Transportation Data (Q2 2021). This was about 7.9 percent increase when compared to a total of N66, 293,398 generated from the movement of cargo the same time in 2020 and about 173 percent rise from the N26, 195,160 collected in Q1 2021. NBS data further revealed that a total of 42,782 tons of cargo were evacuated via the rail system in the period under review.[Business Day]
The Federal Government reforms in the power sector seem to be improving the financial fortune of the sector as shown in the 78.16 percent year-on-year growth in its contribution to GDP, but supply has not materially improved for many Nigerians.
