Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to production adjustments agreement under the Declaration of Cooperation (DoC) reached between member countries of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Non-OPEC Countries. Nigeria’s Representatives on the OPEC Economic Commission Board and Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Malam Mele Kyari, made this known. “Right now, we are not only committed to the agreement but we have elevated our attitude towards it to the point of complete devotion to the adjustments and we urge other parties to follow suit”, he said. According to Daily Times, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Umar Danbatta has urged mobile operators to unlock new services, sources of value generation and revenue streams in their operations. The NCC’s EVC said it was necessary to innovate on how to access segments of the consumer wallets not presently allocated to communications by providing solutions to consumers needs in other vertical areas of education, health and government services made available through the telecom network infrastructure. Danbatta gave the charge at the Emerging Technologies and Innovation Forum Organised by the NCC on Wednesday with the theme ” Developing Nigeria’s Tech Ecosystem: Imperative for Improving Local Contents.” He added the NCC will continue to encourage tech entrepreneurship and in the Information and Communications Technology sector, noting that the Commission has recently embarked on visitation to various tech startup across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria to assess ICT development needs and challenges.
As reported by Daily Trust, Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo has said a substantial change of strategy is necessary’ in the power sector following the performance of the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos). Osinbajo who bemoaned the DISCOS’ inability to distribute available grid power to consumers, said the distribution capacity in the 11 Discos “are significantly low.” He spoke on Thursday at the commissioning of the new Abeokuta 2x60MVA 132/33 kilovolt (kV) substation and associated transmission lines in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital built by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC). “A substantial change of strategy is needed. In recapitalising the DisCos, they have to simply come up with more resources one way or the other. Part of the recapitalisation process is the Siemens electrification programme,” Osinbajo explained. He said the idea of the Siemens electrification programme is to deploy financing for technology on commercial term agreed with transmission and distribution companies in partnership with the German government and Siemens to one, increase transmission and distribution capacity.
