A budget of N100 billion has been proposed for the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan. As reported by Punch, the proposal was submitted on Thursday to the National Economic Council by its Sub-Committee on Farmers/Herders’ crisis. The NEC meeting was presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Chairman of the sub-committee and Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Dave Umahi, made the presentation to NEC. Umahi explained that contrary to the widely held belief, the NLTP was not about cows alone but had three planks, including care for persons displaced by farmers/herders’ crisis and education programmes.
According to Vanguard, President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja on Sunday for New York, United States, to participate in the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA74) which opened on Tuesday, Sept. 17. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Thursday, the president’s participation in this year’s gathering of world leaders is particularly significant as it coincides with Nigeria’s Presidency of UNGA. The General Debates will kick off on Tuesday, September 24, during which leaders of delegations will present their National Statements, as well as speak on the theme of the session. The Presidential aide revealed that President Buhari was scheduled as Number Five Speaker on the first day of the debates, describing it as ”another plus for the country as most world leaders will be listening in the General Assembly Hall, while the global audience watches on live television.”
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday in Abuja assured German companies that the government would honour terms of agreements on investments in the country. The president gave the assurance when he received a Letter of Credence from the Ambassador of Germany, Birgitt Ory, at the State House, Abuja. According to him, Nigerians eagerly look forward to investments in infrastructure, especially the power sector, that will illuminate their homes and stimulate businesses. President Buhari said the agreements on power signed with Germany company, Siemens, was most welcoming for the country, adding that: “Nigeria looks forward to partnerships that will be mutually beneficial.” According to the president, Nigeria remains grateful to Germany for humanitarian interventions in the North-east, providing succour for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and the visit of Chancellor Angela Merkel to Nigeria in August 2018, which further strengthened bi-lateral relations. As reported by Daily Trust, the Federal Government is working hard to apply genetic engineering and bio-technology to ensure food safety and security in the country. The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, disclosed this while declaring open on Tuesday in Abuja a workshop on “Basic Laboratory Training on Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) Detection and Identification. Dr. Onu said the Federal Government had recognised the importance of genetic engineering and bio-technology to the progress of the nation, adding that it would boost local production of food and commodities and minimise the need for continuous import. He said, “The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to support the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) in carrying out this very important mandate to help our country not only in the area of agriculture, but also protecting our environment and ensuring the desire of our nation to industrialise rapidly is achieved.”
