The Central Bank of Nigeria has approved the release of 50,000 metric tonnes of maize to 12 major producers from strategic maize reserve under the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme. According to the CBN, the release of maize to the companies, which is the third of such releases, will reduce the price of grain in the market by checking the activities of middlemen who are hoarding the product and causing artificial scarcity. Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has enumerated the achievements of this administration in infrastructure development. He stressed that the infrastructure development were part of the efforts to lift 100 million Nigerians from poverty. According to Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Mr. Abubakar Aliyu, some of the infrastructure included the commencement of the 156Km Lagos Ibadan rail service and the completion and commissioning of 327 km Itakpe–Warri Standard Gauge Rail after 33 years of abandonment by previous administrations. The federal government has acquired two mobile control towers worth N1.7 billion in order to further enhance coverage of Nigeria’s airspace and improvement of flight safety. The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika explained that the equipment would be deployed to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja and any other airport that may require the facility. Sirika who commissioned the equipment at the Lagos airport recently, said the aim of the present administration is to continue to improve safety in the industry. THISDAY
Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, says the modular refinery located in Ologbo, Ikpoba–Okha LGA, is ready for production. The refinery was developed by two Chinese firms: AIPCC Energy Limited and Peiyang Chemical Equipment Company Limited. It has a capacity of 6,000 barrels per day and it is expected to produce 50 percent of diesel (500,000 litres), 25 percent of naphtha (300,000 litres) and 20 percent of fuel oil (200,000 litres) from its feedstock. Nigeria’s fight against AIDS has gained a boost in a fresh €22.8 million grant awarded to the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) by the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). The fund will go into conducting a Phase IIb clinical trial of IAVI’s Lassa fever vaccine candidate among adults and children in Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. BUSINESSDAY
