The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk, presented to Governor Simon Lalong relief materials worth about N100m from the Federal Government for onward distribution to victims of gunmen attacks in Plateau state. The Minister said the materials were in fulfilment of the commitment made to the Governor. [Punch]
The Federal Government has approved the sum of N75,000 as a stipend per semester for students undergoing degree programmes in Education in public universities in Nigeria. Also, the Nigeria Certificate in Education students will get N50,000 as a stipend per semester as part of the deliberate effort of the goverment to attract the best brains into the teaching profession as promised by the President, Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), last year. The federal government has set up a committee comprising members drawn from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to certify meter installers in the country. Managing Director of the Nigerian Electricity Management Company (NEMSA) Mr Peter Ewesor, who spoke in Abuja, said that the agency, which is responsible for certifying electrical installation personnel, would not accept quacks as meter installers, especially given the current federal government efforts to distribute the devices. In a bid to boost local shipping in Nigeria, the Federal Government has granted zero import duty on vessels and ship parts. The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, disclosed this at the maiden edition of Nigeria International Maritime Summit (NIMS), said that the approval is currently before the Ministry of Transportation and waiting for the official announcement of the development. He said that the fiscal policy is long overdue, adding that the Federal Government has made similar incentives for trial, transport, manufacturers, airline operators among other sectors. [Sun News]
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says efforts are underway to increase the retirement age of teachers in Nigeria’s public service from 60 years to 65 years. Osinbajo disclosed this on Tuesday while hosting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Oluwabunmi Anani, Maltina Teacher of the Year, 2020 Winner, as part of 2021 World Teachers Day celebration. The vice president said that there were also moves to employ teachers into the public service starting from level 8 as against level 7. [Vanguard]
The federal government has announced the reintroduction of the bursary in universities and colleges of education across the country, saying it would liaise with the 36 states Ministry of Education including the FCT Education Board, with a view to effecting it. The government explained that its collaboration with states and the Federal Capital Territory was to identify the respective course of study required respectively by each state, saying an award of N150,000 had been proposed for undergraduates and N100,000 only to NCE students.[Vanguard]
In the last six years, the federal government of Nigeria’s spend on infrastructure which is also part of its economic growth and recovery plan (EGRP) has yielded 13,000 kilometres of roads nationwide, Babatunde Fashola, Minister for Works and Housing, has disclosed. Fashola, who spoke at ‘An Event with the Minister of Works and Housing’, explained however that the roads were still under various levels of construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, etc, citing Bodo-Borno Bridge, Second Niger Bridge, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Abuja-Kano expressway among others. President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the implementation of the electronic call-up system set up by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to address the persistent gridlock along Apapa Port city in Lagos. Buhari, who stated this in his Independence Day address, said the implementation of the electronic call-up system as well as the conversion of the Lillypond Container Terminal to a vehicle transit area will further enhance the ease of cargo evacuation from the port.
