Team Nigeria, comprising of some Nigerian students from the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and University of Port Harcourt, have won the grand first place position out of over 150,000 other students who participated in the Cloud and Network examination at the 2020 Huawei ICT Competition. The students were honored for their achievement at an online awards ceremony hosted from the Huawei Headquarters in China. This excellent performance is an outstanding improvement from last year in which Team Nigeria had emerged third position in the same global competition. This shows the level of improvement Nigeria has made in its knowledge of ICT in just one year. [Punch]

The Federal Government in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Engineering Craftsmen have elevated and inducted a total of 334 artisans to the level of qualified craftsmen. Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who inducted the 334 persons in Abuja, said the move would curb quackery in the engineering and building construction sectors. Fashola said the Federal Government recently approved the Public Building Maintenance Policy to create opportunities for artisans in the built environment. He said by inducting the artisans as craftsmen, their performances were expected to be enhanced. [Punch]

The federal government, Monday, commenced a service-wide training on the performance management systems for officers in the nation’s public service. The training which was declared open by Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria, PSIN, is in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria, CIPM. According to Yemi-Esan, the training is expected to train public officers on objective setting, organisational performance, service delivery as well as public accountability. [Vanguard]

The Federal Government has concluded arrangements to sell Geregu, Omotosho and Calabar power plants for N434 billion next year. The government has also concluded plans to concession the National Stadium, Lagos, Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, Jos International Stadium and Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt for N100 million next year. Also, the government will in 2021, concession the National Art Theatre, Tafawa Balewa Square and all the River Basin Development Authorities to the tune of N836 million. The arrangements by the Government are contained in a document submitted by the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE to the Senate during the 2021 budget defence in Abuja. [Vanguard]

The federal government has approved digital identity for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and the establishment of a national innovation and entrepreneurship centre. With the digital ID, the displaced persons will be able to access public, private, and humanitarian services, and it will also improve internal security, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, said in a statement. The minister also said the innovation centre to be sited in Abuja would provide facilities to nurture new ideas and focus on the promotion and development of emerging technologies. [Daily Trust]

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami has on Friday inaugurated the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics which was established by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The Minister who launched the centre also said that the hub for emerging technologies seeks to position the country for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in line with the eight pillars of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, NDEPS. The centre which is Nigeria’s first public sector technology hub for features Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Robotics, Cybersecurity, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, Block chain, Big Data Analytics and Cloud Computing, among others.
